Every industry has its own language and terms. These words and phrases can be confusing to anyone who is not part of the daily operations of a specific industry, and the home renovation business is no exception.

To help you understand the terms, acronyms, and phrases regularly used in home renovation, Dash Builders has created this handy reference guide. Here you’ll find valuable information allowing you to comprehend and communicate your home renovation needs effectively.

Subfloor.
A secondary layer of sheeting (plywood, concrete, etc.) above structural floor sheeting to smoothen and strengthen different types of flooring area.

Thermofoil cabinetry.
Thermofoil is a surface finish applied to cabinets by multiple manufacturers. It is a plastic material which is thermoformed to the profile of an underlying engineered wood core such as medium-density fiberboard.

LVP/LVT. 
It refers to luxury vinyl plank or luxury vinyl tile flooring. It is a semi-rigid vinyl product that can be clicked together or glued down. There are many shapes and styles available.

Niche. 
An in-wall niche is an indented portion of a wall that can be used as a shelf.

Composite Siding.
A rigid cement or fiberboard siding product that has a painted or printed face, many colors, and styles.

Variance.
Variance is a request to deviate from current zoning requirements. If granted, it permits the owner to use his land in a way that is ordinarily not permitted by the zoning ordinance. It is not a change in the zoning law, but a waiver from the requirements of the zoning ordinance.

Rough-in.
Rough-in is the initial installation of services and usually refers to plumbing or electrical installations.

Laminate.
It usually refers to a wood fiberboard product with a plastic surface layer like flooring or countertops.
